Well, not really assembly - but extensive preparation. According to the instructions that come with the product, you cannot actually use it until you remove the lacquer. It's actually made for display purposes. Here are the instructions that come with the item:

- Boil a large pot of water and baking soda.
- Submerse the item and boil for 5 to 10 minutes to soften the lacquer coating.
- Scrub the item in warm, soapy water with nylon scrubber to remove the softened coating.
- Clean with a copper cleaner.
- Repeat this process for any part of the item that was not submerged in the boiling solution.
- In time, your item may darken or tarnish.

This was a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. You really have to scrub hard and get into all the nooks and crannies.

Also, the brandy glass that comes with it is ridiculously small. Fortunately, the product is still usable with a standard size snifter.

The only reason I can't give this product five stars is that what I received is different than what is pictured: the glasses are clear glass, not the smokey color pictured.

The copper brander warmer and brass candle holder are lustrously beautiful. The handle is a nice addition not all brandy-warmers have. The glasses rest in the holders snugly. They do exactly what they need to while looking great.

My father and I broke out the warmers to enjoy some warmed B&B and cigars while watching Arrested Development and sitting on plush leather recliners. Now that's a good evening!

recipient of this gift says the warmer leaves a carbon smudge on the glass when he uses it, I suggested trimming the wick.
